UN Meeting in Burundi Urges Peace, Development Across Central Africa
The appeal came at the conclusion of the 61st Ministerial Meeting of the United Nations Standing Advisory Committee on Security Questions in Central Africa, a five-day gathering focused on strengthening mechanisms for conflict prevention, mediation, and peaceful dispute resolution throughout the region.
During the meeting, Parfait Onanga-Anyanga highlighted the committee’s long-standing role in supporting stability efforts, noting that the latest session coincides with the 33rd anniversary of the regional mechanism.
He emphasized that several challenges continue to threaten peace and security in Central Africa, stating: "Factors of tension persist within states of the region, in addition to new and constantly evolving challenges, including the terrorist threat, hate speech, disinformation, tensions related to electoral processes, and the effects of climate change."
"All these challenges have repercussions for peace, security, and sustainable development in Central Africa."
Participants stressed the importance of reinforcing regional institutions and cooperative frameworks to address both longstanding security concerns and emerging threats that could undermine stability and development across the region, according to reports.
